Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA)
To obtain a Certificate of Academic Achievement, students in the Classes of 2008 and 2009 must meet state learning standards in reading, writing and mathematics. For the Class of 2010 and beyond, students also must meet the science learning standards.
Students may fulfill this requirement by meeting state learning standards on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) or through an approved CAA Option.
WASL: Students are provided five state-funded opportunities to meet the standard on the WASL while they are enrolled in high school. If students do not meet one or more standards the first time they take the WASL, they will be able to retake the test in August after their sophomore and junior years and in the spring of their junior and senior years.
Additional retake opportunities will be available in high school completion programs at community colleges.
CAA Options: If a student does pass the WASL after two tries and has met attendance and remediation requirements in his or her Student Learning Plan (created for any student who does not pass the WASL), then the student is eligible to use the CAA Options to meet the requirement. The three CAA Options that are available are:
- WASL/Grades Comparison.
- A Collection of Evidence (structured portfolio)
The state also will develop an option for students in industry certificate programs.
- An equivalent score on the PSAT, ACT or SAT.
