Questions about the high school diploma

Question: Can the State Board of Education or the Superintendent of Public Instruction issue a high school diploma?

Answer: No. By law, only school districts (RCW 28A.230.120) and community and technical colleges (RCW 28B.50.535) may issue a high school diploma.

Neither the State Board of Education nor the Superintendent of Public Instruction have been granted the legal authority to issue high school diplomas.

Question: Can school districts issue students a "state" diploma that only meets the state minimum graduation requirements?

Answer: There is no state diploma. Students must, at least meet the minimum high school graduation requirements set by the state to graduate. But, the diploma that the school district issues would come from the local school district and is not issued by the state.

The local school districts policies should outline how additional, locally set graduation requirements can or cannot be waived.
