State Board of Education Recommendation for Mathematics in the Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA)The State Board of Education supports keeping the current requirement to pass the 10th grade mathematics Washington Assessment for Student Learning (WASL). The Board recommends an additional option for students in the Classes of 2008–10. This option is to allow students who have not met standard on the 10th grade mathematics WASL to graduate if they successfully complete two additional high school mathematics classes. These students must also continue to take the WASL until they pass it or graduate. The Board’s support for this option depends on the adoption by the Legislature and funding of the Joint Mathematics Action Plan as the road map to strengthening the state’s school system and dramatically improving mathematics achievement. For the classes of 2011 and beyond, students must meet the current requirement of passing the 10th grade mathematics WASL to earn the Certificate of Academic Achievement. The Board also recommends to the Legislature the creation of a funding pool to provide incentives to schools and/or school districts that make significant gains or demonstrate exemplary performance in closing the achievement gap on the mathematics WASL over the next three years. ### Board Position on Mathematics for the Certificate Academic Achievement (PDF) Click here to download a PDF of the recommendation.
