Release Date:

July 11, 2011

MARYSVILLE, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education’s July 12-14 meeting at the Holiday Inn Express in Marysville will include the Board retreat, a review of Anacortes School District’s implementation of the Teacher and Principal Evaluation Pilot (TPEP), and Marysville School District’s efforts in improving student achievement. The Board will also consider approving the appointment of a new Board member.

The State Board of Education will spend July 12 and the morning of July 13 on their retreat, providing more time for members to review and discuss statewide education governance reform. During the previous two Board meetings, members began their analysis of effective statewide education governance models. The discussion centered around how Washington’s education governance structure compares to other states’, other nations’, and the governance structures promoted during the 2011 Legislative Session.

On July 14, Board members will review the current progress on the Teacher and Principal Evaluation Project (TPEP), which emerged out of the 2010 education reform legislation, E2SSB 6696. Representatives from Anacortes School District will present information on their implementation of the program.

Also on July 14, Marysville School District leaders and a Tulalip Tribes representative will present an overview of their initiatives to partner together to support students, close achievement gaps, and implement School Improvement Grants at three schools. Everett School District representatives will discuss their online high school after staff from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction present an overview of online learning in the state.

The Board retreat on education governance will begin on Tuesday, July 12, at 9:15 a.m. The regular Board meeting is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 13, at 12:30 p.m.
