OLYMPIA, Wash. – On July 12, the State Board of Education welcomed Tre’ Maxie as the newest Board member.
Mr. Maxie’s appointment fills a Board vacancy left by departing member Warren Smith of Spanaway. Mr. Smith was previously elected to the State Board by the Washington State School Directors’ Association.

Tre’ Maxie will be serving this term as an appointed member following an extensive interview process with the elected Board members.

A long time supporter of public schools, Mr. Maxie has remained dedicated to ensuring an excellent and equitable education for Washington students. "My appointment to the State Board of Education is recognition of my commitment to education,” said Mr. Maxie. "My goal is to work closely with educators, advocates, parents, and the community to ensure appropriate support for our school districts and academic achievement for all children.”

In addition to his role with the State Board, Mr. Maxie serves as Executive Director of Powerful Schools, an education non-profit. He has spent over a decade leading non-profits focused on the development of children and youth in public schools. Tre’ previously worked on the staff of a U.S. Member of Congress. In this position, he focused primarily on increasing the graduation rates and college preparedness among underrepresented youth.

The board is comprised of 16 members: five are elected by school board directors, seven are appointed by the Governor, two serve as student representatives, and one serves as a private school representative.
