OSPI Announces Board Elections

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) will conduct elections this fall to fill positions on the State Board of Education and board positions on the state’s nine educational service districts (ESD). State Board of Education candidates must be residents of the region they wish to represent. Learn more about the region representation at the links below. Persons elected to the board may not concurrently serve as a member of the board of directors of either a public school district or a private school. After elected to the State Board, members cannot be employed by any public or private school, college, university, or other educational institution, any educational service district, or the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Three State Board of Education positions are on the ballot this year:

  • Eastern Region Position 1 - incumbent MJ Bolt
  • Western Region Position 3 
  • Private School Representative (statewide)

ESD board of director candidates must be a registered voter and live in the ESD in which the candidate files.

The following ESD positions will be elected this fall:

  • ESD 101 (positions 2, 4, 6)
  • ESD 105 (positions 1, 3, 5, 7)
  • ESD 112 (positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7)
  • ESD 113 (positions 2, 4, 6)
  • ESD 114 (positions 2, 4, 6)
  • ESD 121 (positions 2, 4, 6, 8)
  • ESD 123 (positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8)
  • ESD 171 (positions 2, 4, 6)
  • ESD 189 (positions 2, 4, 6, 8)

Declaration of Candidacy forms must be filed with the state superintendent’s office in Olympia by September 16, 2019. Forms are available online or by request.

Local school board members elect the positions in their relevant region. Approved private school boards elect the State Board of Education private school representative. Voting will take place by mail-in ballot October 1–16. Regular terms of office for board members elected in fall 2019 begin the second Monday in January 2020.
