STATE EDUCATION BOARD PICKS HARDING AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

“Incredibly talented…we’re lucky to have her,” says board chair.

By a unanimous vote, the State Board of Education has selected Edith (Edie) Harding as executive director.

Harding has more than 25 years of experience in educational leadership, including research, policy and board development, budgeting, strategic planning and legislative advocacy. She is presently director of government relations and policy for The Evergreen State College. She is a former research manager for the Washington State Institute for Public Policy on education and other issues, state legislative fiscal analyst, and a former member of the Olympia School Board.

As executive director, Harding will lead the staff members as they support the board’s work serving as an advocate for learning and accountability in Washington State.

“Edie is incredibly talented,” said Mary Jean Ryan, chair of the board. Ryan said that Harding’s passion for education and experience as an administrator, policy analyst, and school board member will well serve the board in its work. “We’re lucky to have her.”

Harding fills the position occupied by interim Executive Director Bob Butts. “Bob’s done a wonderful job during this transition. All of the board is grateful for his excellent work,” said Ryan.

Harding said she is excited about the work ahead. “I believe strongly in the value of Washington’s public education system and the state’s educational reform efforts,” she said. “I believe that the newly configured state Board of Education is in a key position to focus on tough issues and help all children succeed.”

Harding was elected on Friday at the board’s regular monthly meeting. Harding starts in mid August.

Harding holds a B.A. from The Colorado College and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Washington.
