A System of Accountability and Improvement

Sharing responsibility to ensure no student falls through the cracks

Every student in Washington State deserves a high quality education, but right now this isn’t happening. The state Legislature directed the State Board of Education (SBE) to create a statewide system of accountability to improve student achievement and ensure no student falls through the cracks. In 2005 the legislature directed the Board to create a statewide system of accountability to improve student achievement.

A focus on system performance accountability is one of the top priorities for the Board’s work plan in 2007-08.

The SBE is considering:

A system of accountability with clear, appropriate indicators and measurements to monitor progress of the education system.

A continuous improvement assistance program for all Washington schools and districts.

Criteria to identify schools and districts in which students are successful, need assistance, and consistently fail to meet state standards; and proposals for shared responsibility to provide targeted state/local partnerships to help improve student achievement.

Working together to create a system of shared responsibility

The SBE is conducting a study to better understand policy the barriers schools face to providing a high quality education to all students - seeking input from educators, parents, business and community leaders. The SBE wants to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed in postsecondary education, the 21st century world of work, and citizenship.

The system of accountability will be finalized in fall 2008 and presented to the state Legislature in the 2009 session. The SBE is committed to working with all partners to secure the tools and resources needed to prepare students for success.
