Career Readiness

Starting in 2015, the State Board of Education, with the support of a National Association of State Boards of Education Deeper Learning Stipend, has explored and discussed career readiness within the context of Washington’s high school diploma. The SBE has held joint meeting with Washington’s Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board and has met with and discussed career readiness with agency partners, parents, students, community member and representatives of other states.

Suspension of Achievement Awards and RAD Designation for 2018

The Washington Achievement Awards (WAAs) recognize outstanding school performance in seven categories, such as increases in math scores on state tests and English language acquisition. The awards have been held jointly by the State Board of Education (SBE) and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), in collaboration with the state Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee, since 2009.

2017 - Undocumented Students

At the meeting of the Washington State Board of Education, September 13, 2017, the following resolution was proposed and approved unanimously:

WHEREAS, Washington State’s Constitution states that it is the “paramount duty of the state to educate all children residing within its borders…”, and,

WHEREAS, under the U.S. Supreme Court decision Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982), all children have an equivalent right to attend public primary and secondary schools regardless of their immigration status, and

Accountability - What is the State Board of Education’s (SBE) role in school and district accountability?

"The State Board of Education is responsible for implementing a standards-based accountability framework that creates a unified system of increasing levels of support for schools in order to improve student achievement" (RCW 28A.305.130).

Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2021
