OLYMPIA, WA — The Washington State Board of Education seeks a current sophomore ready to step up and make a mark on education. The student must be passionate and driven to serve as the Student Representative for the 2024-2026 term, and live anywhere in Washington.
It was standing-room only while the State Board's Communicators (interns), Star and Indy, presented about their experience at this year's Association of Washington Student Leaders Fall Conference in Tacoma. Students crowded into a math classroom at Washington High School to hear about a high-level internship and how that has impacted two seniors in Washington State.
In the realm of community impact, few names shine as brightly as Lisa Keohokalole Schauer. As the founder of PointNorth, Lisa has dedicated her career to fostering positive change and empowerment within local communities.
The Washington State Board of Education and the Association of Washington Student Leaders is proud to announce the future addition of Castulo Gonzalez as Western Washington Student Representative on the Board. Castulo is currently a sophomore at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.
This month, SBE welcomes Indiana Hilmes (Selah) and Star Mendoza (Puyallup) as student interns - the first SBE Communicators to join the team! Both are juniors, passionate communicators, and storytellers.
In partnership with the Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL), SBE student communicators get the opportunity to work with state government professionals, community organizations, and state-wide peers.

As part of our work on the alignment of graduation requirements with the Washington Profile of a Graduate, SBE staff attended the Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL) student voice meeting on April 11, the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA) Student Representative Network meeting on April 18, and held a student listening session facilitated by SBE student members Pavan Venkatakrishnan and McKenna Roberts on May 3. The AWSL meeting had approximately 25 students and the WSSDA Student Representative Network had approximately 10 students.
