Our Commitment

The Washington State Board of Education (SBE) is committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities are provided equal access to participate in the Board’s programs and services.

To meet this commitment, the Board will follow requirements defined in Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Washington State’s Accessibility Policy USER-01-01-S (formerly 188).

This includes:

  • Ensuring all content posted on our website is accessible to individuals with disabilities.

  • Evaluate current technology accessibility to develop and implement an IT Accessibility Plan that will be updated at least annually.

  • Provide digital accessibility awareness training for all employees on at least an annual basis.

  • Reviewing all requests for accommodation and making reasonable modifications in content, services, policies, and procedures, unless doing so would fundamentally alter the nature of the content, service, program, or activity.

Requesting an Accommodation

If you wish to request an accommodation for a Board service or activity, or to report an issue related to the accessibility of any content on this website or an agency service, please email sbe@k12.wa.us. Please include the web address or URL along with a detailed description of the problems you have encountered.

Anyone who requires an accommodation or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a service, program, or SBE activity should contact us as soon as possible, but no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event. The ADA does not require SBE to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services or impose an undue financial or administrative burden. SBE will not place a surcharge on a particular individual with a disability or any group of individuals with disabilities to cover the cost of providing auxiliary aids or services or reasonable modifications of policy.

If you would like to file a formal grievance with the Board under Section 504 and Title II, please notify the State Board of Education’s communications manager in writing:

Complaints will be resolved through the SBE Nondiscrimination Policy Complaint Procedure.

IT Accessibility Plan

In compliance with Washington State’s Accessibility Policy USER-01-01-S (formerly 188), the Board is currently developing an IT Accessibility Plan. This plan will identify how the agency will make existing covered technologies and services accessible to all members of the public and detail policies to ensure new covered technologies are accessible.

In developing this plan, the agency will:

  • Identify what agency functions are needed by state staff and members of the public and evaluate non-accessible content impacts to those functions.

  • Consider impact to users and frequency of use when prioritizing corrective action, especially for users with disabilities and/or users of assistive technology.

  • Consult community members with related lived experience in building IT Accessibility Plan priorities.

  • Develop a process for reviewing the plan at least annually.

  • Post a public version of our IT Accessibility Plan including recommended alternative access methods.
