State Board of Education Elects Executive Committee

Release Date:

September 28, 2015

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education held elections for four executive committee positions at its September 10-11 meeting in Spokane. Additional highlights are available on the SBE website.

The executive committee implements board decisions, provides oversight of the budget, and conducts necessary business, including determining the agenda for board meetings.

The chair of the executive committee presides at meetings, provides guidance to the executive director of the board, is responsible for the conduct of the board, and is the official voice for the board. Members-at-large carry out duties as requested by the chair. Board members Connie Fletcher, Judy Jennings, and Peter Maier were elected to one-year member-at-large positions.

Upon her re-election as board chair, Isabel Muñoz-Colón said, "I’m pleased to continue my role as chair. The Board has shown its commitment to a high-quality education that prepares all students for college, career, and life, and I look forward to more of this important work supporting Washington students.”

Current members of the board may run for positions on the Executive Committee in elections held each September. Any voting board member may nominate themselves or another member.

The Superintendent of Public Instruction will conduct an election for three positions to the State Board of Education (Eastern Region Position 1, Western Region Position 3 and Private School representative) in November 2015. Candidates wishing to declare candidacy for any of these elected positions must do so by September 30, 2015.
