State Board of Education Elects New Leadership

Release Date:

September 30, 2014

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The State Board of Education has elected a new Chair and Executive Committee Member.

On September 10, the board elected Isabel Muñoz-Colón (Tacoma) as its Chair for the next two years. She is currently a Policy Advisor for the City of Seattle’s Office of Education, where she also co-chairs the English Language Learner working group for the South King County Road Map Project. Muñoz-Colón has worked at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction as the Director of Financial Policy and Research, where she was lead staff to the Quality Educational Council. She has a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame, a master’s degree from the Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D.

"The reason I wanted to be part of the State Board of Education was to ensure that all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity or income, all have the opportunity to be successful in our education system and in their college and career pathways,” said Chair Muñoz-Colón.

She will be joined on the Executive Committee by returning Vice Chair Dr. Deborah Wilds (Renton), re-elected At Large Member Kevin Laverty (Mukilteo), and Immediate Past Chair Dr. Kristina Mayer (Port Townsend), who will serve on the committee until her term on the board is up in January 2015. At the January meeting, the board will vote on another At Large Member and a replacement for the Immediate Past Chair.
