SBE Announces First Ever English Language Acquisition Award

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education (SBE) today announced 42 recipient schools of the first ever English Language Acquisition Award, representing 26 districts from across the state.

Washington’s Connie Fletcher Elected to NASBE Board of Directors

Alexandria, VA — Connie Fletcher, a member of the Washington State Board of Education, was appointed in July to National Association of State Boards of Education board of directors.

Fletcher, who joined the Washington State Board of Education in 2009, will fill the NASBE vacancy made by Oregon state board member Samuel Henry, whose term as senior western area director on the NASBE board expires later this year. Henry has opted for an early departure.

State Board of Education Welcomes New Student Board Member Lindsey Salinas

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Lindsey Salinas, a sophomore at Wellpinit High School on the Spokane Indian Reservation, is the new eastern Washington student representative to the Washington State Board of Education. She will attend the May 2016 meeting in Yakima, and will be sworn in at the July 13-14 board meeting in Spokane.

State Board of Education Announces Member Election Results

OLYMPIA, WA — The State Board of Education welcomes two returning members to the State Board of Education. Kevin Laverty and Judy Jennings will each serve a four-year term beginning January 11, 2015. A runoff election will be held for a third position representing Washington’s eastern region.

The executive committee implements board decisions, provides oversight of the budget, and conducts necessary business, including determining the agenda for board meetings.

State Board of Education to Establish New Graduation Scores for SBAC

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Education will meet Aug. 5, 2015, at ESD 113 in Tumwater to establish minimum scores for graduation on several state assessments. The board will discuss an equal impact methodology in light of high parental refusal numbers among 11th-graders, before determining graduation scores for the Smarter Balanced Assessments, WA-AIM, and transitional End-of-Course assessments.
